Malalai Joya, una donna afghana

Un fotogramma da Nemici della Felicità, un film che segue la campagna elettorale di una donna afghana, Malalai Joya - all'epoca ventottenne - mentre partecipava alle prime elezioni democratiche nel paese in 35 anni. La prima 'clip' mostra Malalai che si rivolge alla Loya Jirqa (Assemblea Costituzionale), chiede che si perseguano i signori della guerra presenti all'incontro e viene immediatamente espulsa (v. immagine e link a sinistra). Eletta poi per la provincia di Farah, il 21 maggio 2007 la camera bassa del parlamento afghano (Wolesi Jirqa) l'ha accusata di avere insultato il parlamento ed ha votato perchè fosse sospesa fino alla fine del suo mandato parlamentare nel 2009. Nonostante la sospensione ha continuato a criticare i signori della guerra seduti al parlamento afghano, nonostante i pericoli alla sua sicurezza. Human Rights Watch, il 21 maggio 2008 ha dichiarato che il parlamento afghano dovrebbe reintegrarla nel suo ufficio, sottolineando che i membri del parlamento regolarmente si criticano tra loro, ma nessuno è mai stat sospeso. Inoltre e in proposito Brad Adams, direttore per l'Asia di Human Rights Watch, ha dichiarato che "il prossimo mese l'Afghanistan chiederà donazioni per miliardi di dollari in assistenza, presentandosi come democrazia emergente [e si è chiesto:] se Malalai Joya resta sospesa per aver esercitato il proprio diritto di esprimersi liberamente e deve continuare a scappare per le minacce ricevute, mentre il governo non fa niente, che cosa ci dice questo fatto sullo stato dei diritti umani e della democrazia?"

The first clip shows Malalai Joya addressing the Loya Jirqa (Constitutional Assembly), calling for the prosecution of warlords present at the meeting and being instantly expelled from the Assembly (image left). She was elected from Farah province and on May 21, 2007, the lower house of the Afghan parliament, the Wolesi Jirga, voted to suspend her. She was accused of insulting the parliament and suspended until the end of her term in 2009. Since her suspension, she has continued to criticize warlords in the Afghan parliament despite the concerns for her safety. Human Rights Watch said, on May 21, 2008, that the Afghan parliament should reinstate her and noted that members of parliament have regularly criticized each other, but no one else has been suspended. Moreover, Brad Adams, Asia director at Human Rights Watch, said that “Afghanistan is requesting billions of dollars in assistance from donors next month and presenting itself as an emerging democracy (…) If Malalai Joya remains suspended for exercising her right to free expression and has to keep moving around because of threats for which the government does nothing, what does this say about the state of human rights and democracy?” (pipistro/eng)
